The Humber Hawks have some of the best teams in the Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) and with such prestigious standards comes an intensive athletic tryout process, especially for the elite Varsity Women’s Basketball squad.

During the 2012-2013 season, the Humber Hawks Women’s Varsity Basketball team won the OCAA bronze medal game, but looking ahead to this season, it’s obvious they’re going for gold.

Each and every player came to the Monday, Sept. 9 basketball tryout with enthusiasm and fire in their eyes. Many familiar faces pounded the ball up and down the court while new ones strived to stand out among the pack.

The team has been gaining momentum on the court during the last two seasons with their new Head Coach, Ajay Sharma. His coaching techniques have worked well with the team so far.

“It’s taken two years to change the basketball culture,” said Sharma. “Whenever there is a change it takes time for the players, assistants and coaches to adjust.”

This will be his third season coaching the team and he is hoping to build on their successes from past seasons.

“We graduated some girls last season and this season we have upgraded with some new talent,” said Sharma, “I’m looking forward to it.”

Freshman of the Year for the 2012-2013 season, Marie Maranan, knows that it takes time and dedication to build a true champion.

“I keep focused on slowly getting better everyday,” said Maranan, a second-year Business Management student and fierce point guard.

“One of our biggest obstacle this season is building new team chemistry,” said Maranan, “we have some great returning players and promising new recruits.”

Winning OCAA championships wasn’t the only thing on player’s minds, some were just trying to make it over the finish line and onto the team.

“I am really determined to make the team,” said Julia Senquina, a first-year Police Foundations student. “Trying out is always the hardest part, but I’m really just looking forward to meeting new people and getting some of that cool athletic gear.”

The newly renovated Humber Gym basketball floors include deeper threes, which players say will take some getting used to.

Rigorous tryouts will continue on until Wednesday, Sept. 18, when final decisions and cuts are made for the season roster.

In their season opener the women will take on the George Brown Huskies on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the Humber Gym.

Be sure to come out and support your Humber Hawks Women’s Varsity Basketball team as they aspire to become national champions in the 2013-2014 season.
