Don’t wait to nominate

Any highly successful students should already have their calendars marked as an important date is coming up this month. February 17 is the last day the Humber Students’ Federation (HSF) is accepting nomination packages for executive, board and program rep positions.

With low voter turnouts for elections in all levels of government, students are often lectured on the importance of voting and democracy. Those lectures sometimes fall on deaf ears, as students think their one vote carries little weight in a federal election among millions of voters.

Now is your chance to really make a difference. HSF executives are the decision-makers in Humber’s student government who have the power to make positive changes. As an executive, you can have your say about how HSF is run. Strong leadership skills, integrity, and a friendly personality will help nominees succeed in the job.

Having this experience in a leadership role looks great on a resume. The fact that your peers have chosen you to represent them shows you’re someone they look up to and trust.

Humberlife is currently running a series of profiles to help students understand the available positions. In this issue we look at the responsibilities and opportunities that come with the title of VP Administration (pg. 3).

If running for a position sounds appealing, but you’re afraid you won’t have time between work and school, remember that HSF isn’t asking you to work out of the goodness of your heart. Salaries for HSF Executive positions start at over $20,000 a year. So if you win, you can probably quit that part-time job. But remember, that salary is a reflection of the duties HSF executives face. Holding an executive position is no free ride.

One argument that sometimes gets people voting in local elections is that local government has the most noticeable effects on daily life. Well, your student government is as local as it gets, so now is your chance to make a change. If you know someone you think would be a great leader, or you’re ready to nominate yourself, don’t miss the deadline and get left behind.
